Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling?

Several issues can cause your AC to run without providing adequate cooling:

1. Dirty or Clogged Air Filter

A dirty air filter restricts airflow, reducing your system's ability to cool effectively. In severe cases, it can cause the evaporator coil to freeze. Check your filter first - if it's visibly dirty, replace it and see if performance improves.

2. Low Refrigerant (Freon)

Your AC doesn't "use up" refrigerant - if it's low, you have a refrigerant leak. Low refrigerant reduces cooling capacity and can damage your compressor if not addressed. Signs include:

  • Ice forming on refrigerant lines or evaporator coil
  • Hissing or bubbling sounds
  • Warm air from vents despite AC running
  • Higher than normal energy bills

3. Frozen Evaporator Coil

A frozen evaporator coil can't absorb heat from your home's air. This is usually caused by restricted airflow (dirty filter, blocked vents) or low refrigerant. If you see ice on the indoor unit or refrigerant lines, turn off your AC and call us.

4. Dirty Condenser Coils

The outdoor unit's condenser coils release heat from your home. When coated with dirt, grass, or debris, they can't release heat efficiently, reducing cooling performance. We clean condenser coils as part of our AC tune-up service.

5. Faulty Compressor

The compressor is the heart of your AC system. If it's failing, your system can't circulate refrigerant and won't cool properly. Compressor problems often produce unusual noises or cause the outdoor unit to shut off frequently.

6. Thermostat Issues

Sometimes the problem isn't with your AC at all - it's the thermostat. A malfunctioning thermostat may not signal your AC to cool properly, or may be reading temperatures incorrectly.

7. Undersized System

If your AC has always struggled to cool your home, especially on the hottest days, it may be undersized for your space. This is common in homes where additions were made without upgrading the HVAC system.

What to Check Before Calling

Before calling for service, check these items yourself:

  • Thermostat setting: Ensure it's set to "cool" and the temperature is set below the current room temperature
  • Air filter: Replace if dirty
  • Vents: Make sure supply and return vents aren't blocked by furniture or closed
  • Outdoor unit: Check that it's running and not covered in debris
  • Circuit breaker: Verify the AC breaker hasn't tripped
